It all started about two months ago, I clicked watch on Marie Kondo's show on Netflix. She is the creator of Spark Joy! If you aren't aware of her program I highly recommend giving her a look. After about three episodes I ran to get her book and began to get busy. The illustrated version of course. I got home and immediately got busy.
I mean I for real went to town on the apartment I got rid or gave away anything that held no joy for myself. By doing this process you start to gain a bug, one that effects a lot more areas than just tidying up one's space. I began to feel I needed to declutter my entire life. I suddenly realized that it was my life and I needed to take control of how I operated at this current point in the universal timeline. I began by writing down things that currently were upsetting me, making me angry, reactive or had a negative effect on my life. All the toxic situations or relationships I had to address, and even the boundaries I needed to push forward.
One of the biggest things I needed to look at was my relationship with social media. I noticed that the one platform I use most often was Instagram. I enjoy taking pictures and using pictures as a platform to spread your message. So I went through my instagram and decluttered, only keeping what I wanted to see and who I wanted to follow. My feed slowly became happier and I started seeing more of the people's pictures I really wanted to see. I have also noticed I am on there way less and interact way more.
The one that I noticed I was on the least but it effected me increasingly more was Facebook. I noticed that whenever I logged on by the time I logged off I was upset, jealous, angered, disgusted or I was the base of someone's entertainment. The people that are about my life are already in my life and those that only show interest for judgement are not invested in my life or progress. I have come to the epiphany of not wanting to live my life for anyone other than myself. To do and say things that I want or need to say, or when not to say anything at all. I remembered the reasons why I originally got on the site to begin with, to connect to find like minded individuals. Then I remembered in my twenties the rise of social media popularity. How many "friends" do you have on your account? I admit like Myspace I went right along with the crowd. Though no matter how many people I added finding true and actual friends was rare, few and very far in between. Facebook made me more lonely than I actually was, it had me wishing for a life when I already had one right in front of me. So I put a post up, t-minus and without sticking to that countdown just up and deleted my account.
It has been a week and I feel incredibly liberated. One of the more comical things I have noticed is how many things "require" you to have a Facebook to use. ::Thumbs Down:: An email works for me, if I can't use that, I can't use your app. But I have noticed that I've become more productive and incredibly more active. I have cried less, my anxiety has gone down and I don't rush to my phone when I'm bored. I opened an Etsy account and sold my first item! I have started making real connections with people and found that I am not as socially awkward as I thought. I think we just have forgotten how to talk with each other and that makes us feel uncomfortable. So I have been trying to find the things I am uncomfortable with and work through them, especially if they cause a emotional reaction for me. Every day I write out my tasks and include something I need to declutter, organize or face.
Think about it, when was the last time you decluttered your ENTIRE life? From your body to your social media. When was the last time you confessed your feelings to the person to which they are towards rather than come up with a way to passive aggressively post it publicly? Are we really wanting to heal? Self care is more than just bubble baths and face masks, its work and transformation too. Why don't you try writing some of your own lists? Write down the things in your life that make you happy or sad. Things that you feel need to be addressed or feelings and situations that you need to face. Write out the areas that you want to declutter or remove. It starts with a list and ends with a smile.
