The Start of it all
Being in the middle of a move and having many of my items in boxes has limited my home yoga practice and I can certainly tell the difference. So to keep from being hard on myself I decided to write about my beloved hobby.
I first came to yoga through a great friend of mine, she was a teacher and wanted to help me with my anxiety issues. She recommended certain stretches and poses that I could do to not only strengthen my body but also my mind. Although I throughly enjoyed her sessions, it wasn't until I started taking Vinyasa classes with my bf that I truly become hooked. The classes were almost two hours long and heated to about 90 degrees. I can not exaggerate on this. I remember the first time the instructor told us how hot he liked to make it I thought I was going to walk out. I'm so glad I didn't. By the end of the first class I was completely addicted.
For ten weeks, every Thursday the two of us were first in line and the first to line up at the front of the class. Very opposite of our introverted personalities. But we loved it! Our instructor was one of those people that light just followed them around. His playlist was a mixture of upbeat positive songs and down tempo relaxing tunes. You started full of energy and ended feeling incredibly amazing and relaxed.
By going to these classes I was inspired to continue my yoga practice at home and tested out multiple websites, apps and books. I even got my boyfriend to start practicing. I have been practicing yoga seriously for over three years now and I have never looked back. There is something about learning about our bodies and mind through a very ancient practice.
The many benefits of Yoga
There are so many wonderful benefits of practicing yoga from physical to spiritual enrichment it helps improve lives all over the world. One of the main aspects of yoga is that it helps to balance and charge your Chakras. Chakra's are the centers of spiritual energy points within you. They're are mainly seven starting from your base all the way up to your crown. By balancing these out you can gain energy, clarity, better health and even emotional balance.
Yoga also helps to release things that no longer server you. Yoga is a form of moving meditation and as you work through the poses you are helping to bring past wounds, stories or issues to the surface so that you can identify, learn and release them. By moving through poses you learn about focus, problem solving and staying with the task at hand. Yoga helps to balance, clear and still the mind. If you've ever tried a class you'll know that there isn't much room for clutter while your trying to twist and turn your body. Being a type of meditation you are able to center and calm your self during the session.
One of the best parts about yoga is it is a set time that is just for you. Turn it into a self date, spiritual time or exercise time. There are many different styles to choose from so if you get bored with one just keep trying till you find the right practice for you. It brings people together, mixing positive energies and gaining a self of community when you are in a class room. Yoga also has amazing physical health benefits. Found this gem going through my camera roll. My #tbt!
We all have insecurities about ourselves, most of us spend time wishing we were someone else. We are constantly bombarded and fed things from the media of how we are not good enough. We are not good enough without this makeup, purse, size, lifestyle, etc. Even I have moments of the "what if's" at times. Advertising is meant to do this, it is meant to put ideas into your head to make you think that until you have that "thing" you won't be happy.
As we go through our lives we often want to quit when the going gets tough. I mean it's easier to blame than it is to forgive, it's easier to play victim than it is to take accountability. Speaking your truth is hard, being yourself is hard, living in the past is hard. But they don't have to be. We have the power within us to find ways to push past the muck and when we don't, the universe gives us exactly what we need. That's exactly what happened to me the past few days.
I have been taking a class to develop my healing and enhancing my coaching practice. It has accelerated things about me so fast that I barely have enough time to buckle my seat belt. When we go through our healing process things from our past surface, we face our darkest recesses of our mind and soul. It can be super scary. I've dealt with my depression, anxiety, pain, and fears again. What I have found through this is the amazing fact that, I can get through it. I have to keep fighting, I have to keep going. That's when it hit me, I have been strong all along even when I thought I wasn't. I'm here to tell you that you can too.
We are amazing creatures, born into pure love but spend years trying to find it again. We get battered down by the burdens of daily life and other peoples needs. Then one day we wake up from the fog and decided it is time to take our life back into our hands. Look back on your past and take note of all the amazing things you have accomplished, all the pain you worked through, the mistakes you learned from, show yourself how far you have come. Every choice, every decision, every opportunity you have taken has led you up to here. It's time to honor yourself, it's time to tell yourself good job. Failures lead to success, fears can lead to adventures and sadness can lead to happiness. Remember life is a process of learning and growing. We aren't supposed to be perfect or know exactly how to do everything right. You can do it!
Things to do:
To many of us have heard that we need to be someone we aren't all our lives. By teachers, parents, bosses, and even strangers can criticize us. Well I'm here to tell you that is a bunch of poppy. We chose to come to this life for a reason, to shine and to illuminate the world with our powerful spirits. Each and everyone of us is a unique and beautiful person. Something that The Institute for Integrative Nutrition taught me was to fit out of the norm. That being different and straying from the flock can lead to so many amazing possibilities we never knew existed.
